Time to make a healthy, permanent lifestyle change

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Hey campers, future campers, past campers, friends, family…It is now 14 days into the new year of 2010. Everyone talks about new years resolutions and making changes, eating healthier, getting fit, etc, etc. I hear it every year from friends and family. Most of them fail, some last 6 months. For me it is different. It has now become my lifestyle. Something I do everyday because I know the long term effects are great. Every day I get out and exercise I feel better mentally, physically, and emotionally. Not only do I look better in the mirror everyday, but my body feels refreshed. I recently went to the chiropractor and told him that my back has been hurting. He took a picture of my back and I was shocked how out of wack it was. Once I started going back to the gym again when my schedule slowed down, I went back to the chiropractor and got another picture of my back taken. He and I were both a little surprised just how well my back has straightened up without going to the chiropractor and just exercising. Well rugby season is starting up again soon, so there goes my back. :)

The point is, it is time to make a healthy, permanent change to your lifestyle. Stop saying you are going to go to exercise and eat right, and actually do it!

Stop binge eating!

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Don’t you hate it when you find your hand in the cookie jar…for the fourth time in one night? Or when you open a bag of chips (crips)/pretzels/cookie dough, and the next thing you know, its all gone?

Binge eating sucks. But what drives us to do that? And how we can stop it?

Disclaimer: Now let me get the legal beagle mumbo jumbo out of the way…I’m not a doctor, and if you have a serious eating problem you should talk to a trained health professional…there’s probably even a medical definition of binge eater that I don’t know about…

…so for our purposes, we’ll refer to binge eating as anything that involves eating too much junk and making you feel guilty.

…And if you are just one of those folks who goes 37 days in a row without binge eating and then – POW – it shows up and kicks you in the butt…leaving you feeling guilty, frustrated, and upset, then let’s help you out.

Personally, there is no better common-sense tip for avoiding binge eating than…

meal plan to help you lose fat

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Losing fat is simple! All you have to do is stuff your face with fruits and vegetables and you’ll end up eating fewer calories overall and the fat will just melt off your body.

Of course, you’re an 8-year old child living in a grown-up’s body aren’t you?

And you’re going to tell me you don’t like fruits and vegetables.

Then you’ll probably “huff” and turn around, march out of the kitchen and go plop down in front of the TV to watch Scooby Doo without doing your homework, won’t you?

Well, time to grow up. “Not liking” fruits and vegetables is no excuse to not even try and improve your diet.

After all, I was a picky eater growing up, and over the years I’ve learned to like, even love, almost every vegetable I can find. In fact, here’s my daily fat loss diet including my complete fruit and vegetable intake.

Make Fitness and Healthy Living A Priority

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Hello Campers…this article was sent out to you last year and I thought it was really inspiring that we need to post it on our new blog. Dana also writes a good paragraph at the end. As always, we truly thank you for choosing Epic Boot Camp and we are proud that we are able to help you live a healthy life and give you that “me” time. Keep up the great work!

When people ask me what I “do” and I tell them that I am a personal
trainer, they automatically start spewing excuses as to why they are
out of shape and unhappy with their bodies. I don’t have to ask a
thing. I am suddenly a shrink. Personal facts surface quickly and
without reserve. Mind you, all I have said is that I am a personal
trainer. Suddenly I’m their life long best friend. “I don’t have time…
I have kids… I go to school… my job wears me out… I just have no
energy… I used to workout…” I’ve heard every excuse in the book.

5 Ways to Speed Up Your Six-Pack

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

By Ben Kallen

No matter what your age, body type, or fitness level, we’re pretty sure one of your main workout goals is to improve your abs. And why not? A flat midsection, with or without a visible six-pack, is the ultimate symbol of being fit and lean. (And yes, it looks great at the beach.) But it’s not just a matter of vanity—a strong core helps stabilize your entire body.

Abdominal Six-Packs

Still, whatever you’re doing to get fit, there’s always room for improvement where the core is concerned. Here are five tips to help you to get those great abs faster than ever:

20 Super Foods to Build muscle and burn fat

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

To build muscle & lose fat, you need a variety of proteins, veggies, fruits, carbs, and healthy fats. Eating protein helps building & maintaining muscle. But it also helps fat loss: protein has a higher thermic effect than carbs/fats.

Eating fats also helps fat loss: your body holds fat if you don’t eat fats. Fruits & veggies contain vitamins & minerals, necessary for recovery from your workouts. And carbs fuel your muscles so you feel full of energy at the gym.

Lots of you struggle to get these foods. Sometimes because you’re too busy or sometimes because you just lack information. This list will help you — 20 super foods you need to build muscle & lose fat.
1. Whole Eggs. Cheap & rich source of protein: 7g/egg. The yolk contains most nutrients: half the protein, vitamins A/D/E and cholesterol to naturally increase your testosterone levels.

Don’t worry about cholesterol in eggs. Dietary cholesterol isn’t bound to blood cholesterol. If you have bad cholesterol, lower your body fat rather than throwing the yolk away.
2. Fish Oil. Reduces inflammation (joints/skin), lowers body fat and increases testosterone levels. You need 9000mg EPA/DHA per day. Since you’ll probably struggle to get that from eating fatty fish, consider a fish oil supplement.

The End of painfully boring cardio workouts

Monday, November 9th, 2009

By Mike Mahler

When was the last time that you got excited about doing some cardio? Doing traditional forms of cardio such as riding an exercise bike or running on a treadmill are about as exciting as watching a movie on the family channel. Lets face it one of the main reasons why people give up on cardio is similar to why smart people do not watch daytime television as both are beyond boring. Moreover, with regular cardio it takes too long to see results to persevere through the boredom. Do not believe me? Take a trip down to your local gym and look at the people in an aerobics class. Now go back in a month and see if you notice any physique composition differences. See what I mean? Fortunately there are several alternatives that offer more variety, are more challenging, and produce faster results. I am going to cover three highly effective fat loss programs in this article: PHA, HOC, and the “Descending Sets” Program.
